Isaac is here!
Issac Leif Yancey arrived on Saturday evening at 19:19 (7:19 pm). He was 7 pounds and 11 ounces of cuteness. He might be tall and skinny like his dad because he was 19 inches long. Little Isaac is sleeping and eating well. He slept most of last night. He loves to be held by his mom and dad. He knows our voices already and turns his head when he is sleeping to face us. Isaac also loves to look around and we think he has some sweet baby blue eyes. We are so blessed that he is strong and healthy and Abby is feeling well too. We should get to leave the hospital today. Abby, Isaac, and I can't wait to see you all. Love, Mr. Y

Instructions/Reminders while I'm out...
1st Grade -
The biographies that students are researching can be found on the first grade table.
Writing folders are light blue (with a few pinks). Students need to fill out their writing checklist first (self-assess) then have you look at their work with them.
Students may then research another historical figure or begin working on their product (animoto video, prezi, or video recording on Ipad). Their assignment sheet is on my computer table with the title "Super 3: Be a Biographer!" Each student already has a copy.
2nd Grade - "Weather Watch: A Real-Life Weather Problem"
Assignment Sheets are on my computer table. Students need to record notes in bullet or paragraph form in booklets. You will need to check their notes before they can begin working on their product (prezi or Ipad video recording).
Students need to be paraphrasing as they are researching their weather questions on the websites.
Students are working individually but may share notes/ideas/research with one other person as they work.
Students may need help with the citation maker on ncwiseowl.org to make citations for their products at the end.
3rd, 4th, and 5th -
Students know their assigned seats.
Assignment "Why Biography" will guide their research. I will have explained the assignment to them already and they should have a copy in their booklet.
Students should be taking notes in the format shown on the whiteboard. These notes should be in respond to questions on their assignment sheet. Students can take notes in their booklets.
Students can use computers or Ipad to create their product (prezi, glog, animoto, Ipad video). Students may also make hand-made products such as a trifold.
They need to use their sheet to add citations and evaluate their work if they finish their product.
Their books are on the 4th and 5th grade counters. Websites are on my blog: mrysayshi.blogspot.com
They should not be going to any other websites unless you have viewed it and approved it already.
Students may help other students with their projects if they have finished everything and you have checked it.

New PBL Projects for 1st-5th
5th grade:
Our fifth grade group has done an amazing job researching how their country of choice contributes to global society (in terms of environment, culture, politics, military, economics, and more). I was very impressed with both their products and presentations. We had a sort of "countries fair" where students gave online presentations or used their trifolds to share about their country's contributions. I think we all got to see how interconnected we are as a global society.
We are now imagining that our local library needs an exhibit on the Civil War and we are the researchers in charge of gathering information and putting together a display. This display will have print and online features.
Some of the topics students will be researching include:
-Causes and consequences of the Civil war
-Contributions of Africans Americans, children, and women to the war effort
- Major leaders and their impact on the war
- Daily life of a soldier
- New developments in technology that affected warfare
- Turning points/Battles in the conflict
- Important documents and their message (Gettysburg Address and Emancipation Proclamation)
- Geography of the conflict (which states were on which side and why)
- Strategies and resources of both the North and the South

4th grade
Fourth grade has been studying different forms of energy: magnetism, heat, light, electricity, and sound. They have been investigating how they can develop materials to teach their 4th grade peers different major concepts in each type of energy. They are also interested in experiments in energy and how energy is used in everyday life, including: homes, industry, medicine, technology, etc.
Students have been using the the prezi site to design engaging and logically flowing presentations.
3rd grade:
3rd grade recently finished sharing their websites on which country they thought they would like to live in (some changed their minds after their research!). Students analyzed countries for human and physical characteristics.
Our new problem has to do with space. We are imagining that a comet is headed straight for Earth and we have to evacuate. My third grade group has been assigned as a research team to report back on where we should go, what dangers lie in our path/ what lies our in our solar system and deep space, what space equipment we might need, how will we adapt to/train people to live in space, which astronauts have the best qualifications to lead our mission, and other related concerns. They are putting together their findings into a prezi presentation as well.
Second Grade
Second grade recently finished their websites on three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases. They did a wonderful job and grew a lot in their note-taking and organizational writing skills.
Second grade now has a two part problem. First, how can we create an online timeline about important inventions from the past (paying attention to the who, what, when, where, why, and how of each invention). Second, their driving question is: how can we invent something using the invention design process. Students will learn the different planning stages it takes to invent something. They will also learn about invention contests to enter, how and why to obtain patents, how other kids their age have invented things, and how to even start their own inventor's club at school. I am excited to see what inventions they come up with to solve a real problem.

These students are reading and writing superstars. They recently finished their own websites on how we make and use natural resources. They really did an outstanding job with these!
Students are now faced with a new problem to solve. They are imagining that in the future people have stopped reading and learning about holidays. My first graders are in charge of designing Power Point presentations about various holidays to help people remember how and why we celebrate!

Websites for Project Based Learning Assignments
Mr. Y's groups have the unique opportunity to take part in problem based learning. As part of this, we are learning how to use the Super 3 (K-3) and the Big 6 (3-5) to teach research skills!

1st grade has been investigating different natural resources and writing about how they are altered and used.
Our problem is this: how can we teach our peers about natural resources in our community? We are looking at how we take important natural resources and turn them into things that we need everyday!

November Update!
1st grade: We have been enjoying learning about the sun, moon, planets, and stars!

2nd grade: We have been enjoying books by Roald Dahl. Our group just finished The Magic Finger and we will read Fantastic Mr. Fox next!
3rd grade: Medieval tales have been a blast! The students have been reading and discussing the following stories: Robin Hood, Beowulf, The Green Knight, The Island of the Lost Children, and The Werewolf. Some students have been crafting their own stories at home!
4th grade: It's Maniac Magee time! Fourth grade has been reading and analyzing this text for a week now. The students are making some amazing connections and thinking deeply about the themes of the story. They have packets with critical thinking questions and vocabulary to explore.
5th grade: We have been reading and writing poetry from the book Reflections on a Gift of Watermelon Pickle...
My students picked a poem of their liking and wrote a different version of it. They turned out great!
